Palace Cinemas is set to open a 15 screen cinema complex on the site of the former Pentridge Prison in Coburg, Melbourne.

The cinema, temporarily named Palace Champ Street, forms part of a large-scale redevelopment of the prison site by the Shayher Group.

The cinema will sit within a 3,650 square metre boutique retail precinct, alongside a hotel, apartments and offices. However, it will not be located within an existing heritage building.

“My family’s vision for Palace Champ Street is to create a warm, vibrant, film, arts, and hospitality hub, which will unite cinema lovers of all ages and cultural backgrounds,” said Palace Cinemas CEO Benjamin Zeccola in a statement.

The news follows on from Palace’s recent announcement it will be building two new cinemas in Sydney’s Central Park and Double Bay.

Palace Champ Street is expected to open in mid-2019.
