Telstra will sell its BigPond Movies' DVD library to Quickflix and refer its current customers to the fledgling online DVD company.
The major telco announced on Friday that it would close its BigPond Movies DVD rental service from September 30.
Quickflix founder and executive chairman, Stephen Langsford, said: “As a result of this agreement we will significantly increase the depth of our library of latest release and catalogue titles and we’ll be servicing the whole of Australia with next day delivery in all major cities”.
Quickflix will make a variable payment based on the number of customers who transfer to the DVD rental service. Quickflix currently has almost 50,000 movies, TV series, documentary and sporting titles across 400 genres.
The acquisition price was not announced.
Telstra is still encouraging its customers to buy or subscribe to its Telstra T-Box, which offers rental movies over broadband, as well as seven BigPond TV channels and personal-video-recorder capabilities.
