Samsung Electronics and screen technology company RealD have launched a new LCD display that allows viewers to watch high definition 3D video while wearing the same RealD 3D cinema glasses.
The new LCD-based RDZ 3D display technology, which was shown at CES conference in Las Vegas this month, uses active shutter technology on the display unlike patterned retarder-based 3D display technologies that cut resolution in half or diminish brightness. The RDZ display is also 2D compatible.
3D televisions are being strongly promoted by local retailers but are yet to take off in Australia due to a lack of content and cost.
Samsung Electronics LCD Business, master of R&D, Seonki Kim, said: "We believe all displays should have the same high resolution video and free viewing angles both in 2D and 3D. LCD based RDZ 3D displays will offer consumers the choice of eyewear technologies without compromising image quality, which only active sync 3D technology can do."
Samsung LCD is currently developing displays based on RealD's proprietary RDZ 3D technology.
