At a gala event held at the Fremantle Esplanade Hotel on 8th June 2011 Seniors on Screen won the Award for “Outstanding Community Event” at the Fremantle Chamber 2011 Fremantle Business Awards. The MC for the night was comedian/actor Sam Longley and all the Awards were presented by well known business identities. Seniors on Screen Project Co-ordinator, Helen Vidovich, said she was thrilled that the support for Seniors on Screen by the business community and volunteers had been acknowledged by winning the Award.
Seniors on Screen (SOS) is a Business owned by the Film & Television Institute Inc. WA (FTI) and was created to develop a focus with FTI on events, training and participation designed to support active ageing and the interests of seniors. Since it was formed in 2005 Seniors on Screen has conducted the following especially for Seniors. Five specialist Film Festivals; a Storyboard Seminar; A Digital Storytelling Workshop where 10 Digital Stories were created; Established a website www.seniorsonscreen.com (includes the 10 Digital Stories for viewing); Presented two Senior’s Week Film Screenings; Presented a public screening of the Seniors’ Digital Stories at the State Library.
The Film Festivals screen films that are chosen for their social/cultural content or for the past three festivals the films have been adapted from a book. The audience are encouraged to read the book, come to the film and following the screening a guest speaker leads an open discussion on the adaptation. Afterwards refreshments are served where the audience can mingle and continue the discussion.
