Short film challenge to raise global awareness about the Homeless

PRESS RELEASE:

Screen My Shorts, Australia, in partnership with Parramatta City Council, is launching a global short film challenge over 30 days to raise awareness about the Homeless. Filmmakers, animators, machinimatographers and documentary makers from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds across the planet are invited to produce a 3 – 10 min short film on the one theme: the Homeless.

The Lord Mayor of Parramatta, Cr John Chedid, said that Council is proud to be partnered with Screen My Shorts to help promote this cause. “Project Homeless aims to raise awareness of homelessness, a global issue. This is a great opportunity for filmmakers to display their talents and aid an excellent cause in the process,” Cr Chedid said. “Council is pleased to support the festival by providing up to $10,000 worth of cash prizes. I encourage all budding filmmakers to start getting creative.”

All teams taking part in this global initiative will be allocated one of over 20 subjects/topics to explore and relate it to the Homeless, such as current refugee situations, LGBT intolerance, homeless by choice, gambling and economic pressures.

The official ‘Filmmaking Period’ begins on Friday 7.00 pm 11th April 2014, in each participating each city. This is when teams are randomly allocated a subject and line of dialogue, which relate to the central theme in their short film. Filmmakers must finish uploading their film by Sunday 12:00 midnight 11th May 2014.

“This a great opportunity for creative people to band together, produce their own short films,” said Tom Papas, Festival Director, “with the added bonus of sharing $10,000 cash prizes.”

The completed films will be judged by an expert panel and the finalists will screen at the Screen My Shorts Awards ceremony, in Australia. Who will take out the coveted boxer shorts trophy and receive $5,000 cash? From the registration fees collected, Screen My Shorts will donate 25% to a worthy cause that is relevant to the theme.

Project Homeless was purposely designed as a global event for filmmakers to participate, contribute and raise awareness whilst giving them opportunities to develop their craft. Their creative works then become a community resource for education, entertainment and inspiration.
