Sony unveils HXR-NX5R, the ultimate Full HD handheld camera with the latest technology
The multi-purpose NXCAM with 3G-SDI provides rich colour imagery and high sensitivity with three CMOS sensors
SYDNEY, 24 August 2016 – Sony introduces its latest NXCAM camcorder, the HXR-NX5R, which supersedes the popular NX5 and NX3 models and offers network functions and enhanced shooting performance. Superb colour imagery and high sensitivity is achieved with three 1/2.8-type Full HD Exmor CMOS sensors and 40x Clear Image Zoom function to double the optical zoom without losing image quality. The camcorder is equipped with multi-format recording to satisfy a wide range of shooting applications and environments such as weddings, corporate productions and other live events.

Delivering notable improvements in overall image quality, further upgrades made from the NX3 and NX5 include a 3G-SDI terminal that supports Full HD 50p output. The HXR-NX5R incorporates the first on-camera adjustable brightness LED video light, minimizing the need for external lighting equipment. The cutting edge technology uses a digital signal processor (DSP), advanced noise reduction and extraordinary detail reproduction to deliver images that are remarkably lifelike in texture and detail. A direct menu function and a responsive joystick have also been added for ease of use.
Sony’s HXR-NX5R provides content creators with newly upgraded network functions, including FTP and live streaming, with built in Wi-Fi, along with simultaneous backup recording through dual SD card slots for enhanced reliability and adaptability in challenging live event environments. Options for advanced XAVC-S 50Mbps or established AVCHD / DV recording formats are available to suit a range of workflows and client requirements, enabling content creators to make fine adjustments to their production depending on the image quality needed.
The HXR-NX5R features easy-to-use direct functions and a responsive joystick, making access to key camera functions straightforward without needing to enter the menu whilst on the go. These features are combined with a wide viewing angle and high contrast OLED viewfinder to monitor the image. The new professional functions provide content creators with a cost-effective solution by minimising the need for extra accessories. For example, the in-built Multi-Interface Shoe supports a UWP-D series wireless microphone receiver, providing power to the receiver without the need of batteries and transfers the audio to the camera without external cables.
Sony also announced the release of its new compact multi-function remote commander, the RM-30BP, successor of the RM-1000BP, the industry’s first comprehensive, multifunctional remote commander. The new RM-30BP is introduced to enhance and expand the possibilities of multi-camera shoots and provide increased creative options remotely.
Ideal for freelancers and small-budget productions, the lightweight remote can be handheld, placed on a table or attached to a tripod arm for operation. The RM-30BP can control most camera functions including:
· Lens control: one push auto / manual focus, iris and zoom control
· Camera control: recording / display functions, shutter speed, white balance – including six assignable buttons
· Playback and multi-camera control (up to 3 cameras)
The new remote can also be connected to the new MCX-500 switcher for direct multi-camera control, and is compatible with the new HXR-NX5R and PXW-FS7 v4.0, with plans to introduce compatibility for other Sony camcorders.
The new MCX-500 is an all-in-one switcher system ideal for live events or corporate productions, and designed to work alongside HXR-NX5R and RM-30BP units for multi-camera operation. The MCX-500 sends PGM/PVW tally signals to each HXR-NX5R via the RM-30BP. This feature allows the operator to know which camera has been selected for live, allowing content creators to create a simple live production system.
“We’re excited to announce this latest addition to our NXCAM range, broadening our offering of compact, cost effective camcorders that deliver Full HD rich imagery ideal for event videography,” said Mr. David Green, Assistant Product Manager, Sony Australia. “This upgrade, the new switcher and new commander, further highlights our commitment to driving technology advancements throughout our whole portfolio, providing the best possible options for content creators who need shooting flexibility and high quality imagery when capturing corporate productions or live events.”
The products are planned to be available in Australia from the following dates:
HXR-NX5R camcorder October 2016 onwards
RM-30BP remote commander September 2016 onwards
MCX-500 switcher January 2017 onwards
