Star Wars set to smash global records

There are only so many Skywalkers in Cinema.

The JJ Abrams film, Star Wars: The Force Awakens has completely dominated the box office in its Australian release.

Disney's shares are up 23 per cent.

The film is set to rake in $2 billion worldwide.

This figure is well above the best releases of the last few years.

Ninety per cent of the sales have come in the first 20 hours.

In Australia, Event Cinemas sold 1200 tickets in the first minute.

Big films like, The Dark Knight rises, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and The Avengers: Age of Utron are being thoroughly thrashed.

Imax took US$6.5 million on on a single day.

Avatar took $2.787 billion. But, keep it in persperctive, the adjusted (for inflation) figures for the 1977 Stars Wars were impressive ($2.825).

The difference between then and now is there is a China release date which will double all records.

The film will release in Australia on December 17.

But the movie would've never been made if Disney did not broker a deal for $4.05 billion to buy Lucas Film.

Yesterday the trailer had 13 million views in total.

The film will return famous characters like Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher and introduce new blood as well.

Daisy Ridley, John Boyega and Adam Driver will be new additions to the cast.

Whether it's a melted helmet or a light sabre this is one movie people want.

  1. Two billion worldwide?
Too much gold for one gringo.
And they said the ‘Western’ genre (think Star Wars) was dead! It is nice, however, to see the old Western reimagined.
