The Melbourne International Film Festival is now open for entries for its 58th annual celebration of cinema. Screening nearly 260 feature films, the Melbourne International Film Festival is an iconic Melbourne cultural event and the pre-eminent launching platform into the Australian market.
“Contrary to all the recent talk about Australian films not connecting with a public, we pride ourselves on making vital connections, not only with Australian films but with films from all over the globe, with a passionate and energetic audience“ said Executive Director, Richard Moore.
Affectionately known as MIFF, the festival takes over the central city grid, peppered with laneways, bars and restaurants for a total of 17 exhilarating days. The festival enjoys annual admissions of more than 182,000, making it one of Melbourne’s most significant public events.
In addition to the features MIFF holds the most highly regarded short film competition in the Asia Pacific, The best MIFF shorts competition screens approximately 100 short films every year, including animation, experimental, documentary and fiction films. In 2009, the Festival will offer filmmakers from around the world the opportunity to compete for 10 awards, with prize money totalling AUD$35,000.
