Disney's Zootopia jumped to the front of the pack at the Australian box office over the weekend, while horror film The Witch scored the highest per-cinema average in limited release.
With the likes of Wreck-it-Ralph, Big Hero 6, Frozen and now Zootopia winning critical and commercial hosannas, Disney's feature animation division is now stacking up very well against once-peerless subsidiary Pixar, whose output has become increasingly hit and miss in the last couple of years.
Zootopia debuted at 262 Australian locations for an overall take so far of over $4.7 million.
Next best was Gerard Butler's London Has Fallen. The actioner bowed on 204 screens and rang up close to $2.2 million over the weekend.
Simon Stone's The Daughter, starring Geoffrey Rush and Odessa Young, opened on fifty-three screens for a strong take of $423,351 in its first week.
In its sixth week, Deadpool dropped thirty-nine percent to bring its overall cume to $41.2 million, while Maggie Smith's The Lady in the Van dropped forty-two percent in its third week and is about to crack the $7 million mark at the local box office.
Dan Trachtenberg's clever sort-of sequel 10 Cloverfield Lane, on 213 screens after two weeks, has rung up $2.8 million so far, while Sacha Baron Cohen's Grimsby has made over $2.9 million in two weeks at the local BO, but dropped fifty-three percent in its second week.
WB's comedy How to Be Single, starring Rebel Wilson, is still on 220 screens after five weeks, for a total of around $10.2 million.
Holdovers Brooklyn and Spotlight (in their sixth and eighth weeks respectively) rounded out the top ten, ringing up a couple of hundred thousand apiece to take their cumes to $5.5 million (for Brooklyn) and $5.2 million (Spotlight).
Sundance sensation The Witch opened on six screens, and raked in an average of $18,637 per location to bring its pot to $115,182 overall.
Sony's religious-themed Miracles from Heaven, starring Jennifer Garner, debuted at thirty-eight locations for a take of $151,444.
