Amazon to release The Dressmaker theatrically in North America

Jocelyn Moorhouse and Sue Maslin on set.

Amazon Studios has bought U.S. rights to Jocelyn Moorhouse's The Dressmaker.

As first reported by Variety, Amazon will release the film theatrically in the States in the second half of the year.

While Universal had some foreign rights, Amazon swooped on the film for North America, no doubt encouraged by the boffo box office it has done in its home territory and the marquee value of Winslet.

Amazon is muscling into the film space aggressively, buying up films like Manchester by the Sea at Sundance and bringing five of their own films – including Woody Allen's Cafe Society and Nicolas Winding Refn's The Neon Demon – to Cannes.

Amazon has also been actively acquiring packages on the Croisette in recent days, picking up Lynne Ramsay's new project with Joaquin Phoenix, You Were Never Really Here, among other titles.
