Festival prizes for Aussie trio

Predestination, The Babadook and Wyrmwood featured prominently in the Toronto After Dark Film Festival awards.

The Spierig brothers’ Predestination was named best sci-fi film and best screenplay (adapted from the short story All You Zombies by Robert A. Heinlein) and took the silver prize in the audience choice awards.

The Babadook was feted for best director (Jennifer Kent), lead actress (Essie Davis), best monster/creature, scariest film and best trailer.

Kiah Roache-Turner’s Wyrmwood nabbed the awards for best action film and the film that festival audiences would most like to lead to a sequel.

Norwegian director Tommy Wirkola’s zombie action comedy sequel Dead Snow 2: Red vs Dead collected the top prize, the audience choice award for best feature.

Also, The Babadook has been nominated for best independent international feature at the 17th annual British Independent Film Awards. The other nominees are Blue Ruin, Boyhood, Fruitvale Station and Ida.  The awards will be presented on December 7.
