The new ABC TV drama series East of Everything which began filming in Byron Bay on 28 May, is being shot on the ARRIFLEX SR3 Advanced Super 16mm. This new series adds to ARRI Australia’s other TV series Super 16mm format customer, Millennium Television, the producers of McLeod’s Daughters. East of Everything Director of Photography (DP), Brendan Lavelle ACS, is also trialing ARRI’s newly launched super 16mm camera, the ARRIFLEX 416. The small size and light weight of the 416 equipment has the extra benefit of easy portability for fast paced production environments. Some of Lavelle’s DP credits include Murder Call, The Secret Life of Us and Stingers.
Advances in lenses, film stock and post production technology have elevated the Super 16 film format to new levels of image quality and production efficiency. Super 16 is now routinely used for standard and high definition television productions, feature films, commercials and documentaries with stunning results.
ARRI Australia General Manager, Stefan Sedlmeier, said, ‘The new film stocks have increased the capabilities of film tremendously. As a result we can now do fantastic stuff for television comparable to 35 mm. Film is different in look from HD, and Super 16 is an affordable format that l just looks fantastic and perfectly fits to the HD format. For our friends and customers, ARRI will continue to provide new and innovative tools to help translate ideas onto screen.’
