Frame, Set & Match (FSM) congratulates Paul Goldman and Alice Bell

The winners of the 2007 ARIA Artisan awards were announced last week with Paul Goldman and Alice Bell winning the Best Video Category for their direction of Straight Lines by Silverchair. Their video beat the likes of Powderfinger, Lost and Running and Sneaky Sound System, Pictures to claim first prize in this prestigious award ceremony.
FSM is proud to have worked on this clip, from rushes through to grading and the comprehensive flame compositing. From the outset, Paul and Alice had a clear vision of what they wanted to achieve. When I was first contacted by Paul, he told me about the concept of playing with light commented Steve Dunn, Managing Director, FSM, We were intrigued by the concept and brought on board compositors Stuart Cadzow, Viv Baker and David Tindale, and, to realise Paul and Alices vision.
FSMs VFX team supervised the shoot, provided rushes transfers and grade, and worked on all the visual effects with Stuart Cadzow as the lead compositor. Stuart used a combination of live action effects and specialist enhancements to give the light effects a look that was emanating from the source.
It was a fine line in getting the look of the light flares to be natural, prominent but not dominant and artificial. One of the largest challenges was to track points on the artists bodies with wild camera movement and making the movement of the light effect still look natural.
The visual effects complemented the intense grade to the pictures that were shot by DOP Garry Phillips. This clip gave an overall feel that both Paul and Alice were very happy with.
‘Paul and I owe it to Steve Dunn and his amazingly generous and creative team at Frame Set and Match. They jumped onboard so enthusiastically and tirelessly and worked day and night to bring that clip to a completely different level. We take all our clips to FSM because we love collaborating with them.’
– Alice Bell
‘It’s really exciting to win this award, with 217 music videos under my belt it’s my first ever ARIA. The song was a real gift, the band was inspiring and FSM gave us enormous support from start to finish.
They were intrinsically involved in this project. Steve Dunn has been amazing. We owe designer/compositor Stuart Cadzow and so many others there at FSM a huge thank you for all their tireless work and their creative input.’
– Paul Goldman
