Press release from Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy
The Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy, Senator Stephen Conroy, today thanked Maurice Newman AC for his contribution to the ABC.
Mr Newman’s term as Chair of the ABC Board concludes on 31 December 2011. He has chaired the ABC Board since 1 January 2007, having previously served for more than three years as a non-executive director.
“Maurice has chaired the ABC Board through a period of significant growth and made a considerable personal contribution to the fortunes of the ABC,” Senator Conroy said.
“Under his stewardship the ABC has increased its reputation as a trusted and innovative media organisation that enriches the lives of all Australians.
“I wish Maurice all the best for the future and congratulate him on his tireless advocacy on behalf of the national broadcaster.
“During his time as Chair, the ABC was awarded its largest funding increase since 1983, when the Government granted the ABC an additional $165.3million in core funding over the life of the current triennium in the 2009-2010 budget.
“I particularly wish to note the role the ABC, with Maurice at the helm, has played in recent years in driving digital television, and in strengthening its regional presence.
“The successful establishment of ABC3 for children and the launch of Australia’s only free to air 24 hour news service, ABC News 24 have played a major role in the success of the transition to digital television.
"The launch of ABC Open last year has enhanced the ABC’s reputation as a vibrant and contemporary broadcaster with an unparalleled commitment to regional and rural Australia.
“I will soon be calling for expressions of interest from individuals who have the necessary skills and experience to fill the position of Chair of the ABC Board.
“The Australian Government’s merit-based appointment process for ABC and SBS board appointments has been highly successful, with ten appointments being made to both organisations since 2009 – more than two thirds of the current board members.”
Details of the merit-based appointment process will be advertised in the national press and made available at: www.dbcde.gov.au/abcsbsboards
