Queensland Shines In US Blockbuster Fool’s Gold

The Sunshine State gives Hollywood star Kate Hudson a run for her money as the two share the spotlight in tomorrow night’s (2 February) Australian premiere screening of Fool’s Gold on the Gold Coast.

Arts Minister Rod Welford, who will attend the premiere at Warner Bros Movieworld’s Roxy Theatre, said the film showed off Queensland’s natural assets.

Fool’s Gold showcases Queensland’s great beauty and is a shining example of the state’s magnificent production capability,’ said Mr Welford.

‘The production was shot extensively on location across the state, including in the Whitsundays, Hervey Bay and in Brisbane, and despite the film’s title, Queensland comes off as the 24-carat real deal.

‘The film created 1,155 jobs for Queensland cast and crew, and contributed significantly to the state’s impressive $159 million production expenditure total for the 2006-2007 financial year.

Fool’s Gold was also the catalyst for new film infrastructure – a $2.1 million world-class tank was built for underwater shooting at the Studios with assistance from the our Government and Warner Roadshow.

‘The tank successfully lured US production giant Walden Media to Queensland to shoot Nim’s Island in late 2007, and will be a strong drawcard for future productions.’

Mr Welford said the Pacific Film and Television Commission’s expert marketing, locations assistance and incentives were instrumental in attracting Fool’s Gold to the state.

‘Once the world sees Fool’s Gold and word gets out about all that Queensland has to offer, many golden opportunities lie ahead for our industry,’ Mr Welford said.

Directed by Andy Tennant (Hitch) and starring Hudson, Matthew McConaughey and Donald Sutherland, US blockbuster Fool’s Gold is an adventure comedy about an estranged couple’s search for lost treasure.

Local film and television glitterati, including the cast of Sea Patrol, will join industry heavyweights on the Roxy’s red carpet for the premiere.

Fool’s Gold will be released in Australia on 7 February, one day ahead of its US release.
