Spotlight on Perth as The Reckoning premieres at CinéfestOZ

PRESS RELEASE

Perth director John V Soto’s The Reckoning is set to make its Australian premiere this month at CinéfestOZ.

Shot in the Western Australian capital, the psychological crime drama stars Jonathan LaPaglia as Robbie Green, a detective called in to investigate the roadside execution of his colleague Jason (played by Luke Hemsworth).

When he arrives at the crime scene he discovers a data card from a video camera containing footage shot by two runaway teenagers (Hanna Mangan-Lawrence and Alex Williams) who are making a documentary about the drug-related death of a sibling. With the help of colleague Jane Pearson (Viva Bianca) Robbie retraces the teen's journey and soon begins to uncover a trail of the dead that leads all the way back to police headquarters.

Described as "Memento meets Kalifornia", this fast-paced thriller, featuring a pulsating score by composer Thomas Rouch, is one of six finalists in CinéfestOZ's inaugural $100,000 Film Prize – awarded to the producer of an Australian feature film or feature-length documentary.
The Reckoning recently had its UK premiere at The British Independent Film Festival in Leicester Square, London where Soto won Best Director and Rouch, Best Music.

Soto and The Reckoning producer Deidre Kitcher will walk the CinéfestOZ red carpet at the film's official Australian premiere at the Bunbury Regional Entertainment Centre on Thursday, 22nd August, along with Bianca and Williams.
“The Reckoning is a real edge-of-your-seat thriller and it is wonderful to see it in the running for our first ever Film Prize,” CEO of CinéfestOZ Malinda Nixon said.

“We are delighted some of the cast and crew from the film will be joining us at CinéfestOZ and look forward to welcoming them to the South West.”

CinéfestOZ runs from 20th – 24th August in Busselton, Bunbury, Margaret River and Augusta, Western Australia.

Feature films, along with an exciting program of short films, documentaries, industry workshops and related events occur throughout the South West of Western Australia as part of the festival.

CinéfestOZ is supported by the State Government through Tourism WA’s Regional Events Program, which is funded by Royalties for Regions. The festival acknowledges its strong partnership with ScreenWest, Western Australia's screen funding and development agency.
