With the Reef under threat from massive dredging developments, shipping and climate change, Australian filmmakers now have a chance to play their own part in protecting this world renowned environment.

The #ReefReels competition is open to filmmakers across the globe and will see amateurs and professionals battle it out for the opportunity to have their film screened live to around 150,000 people at Tropfest Australia 2014 this December.

GetUp’s national director Sam McLean said: “This is a chance for filmmakers to play a significant part in protecting the largest coral reef ecosystem on Earth, one of the world’s most beautiful places.”

“It’s also a terrific opportunity for filmmakers and creatives to build their profile and audience base with a showcase at the world’s largest short film festival, Tropfest.”

#ReefReels will accept all kinds of films across a range of disciplines, from animation, to comedy, drama, documentary and more.

Additional top tier prizes and opportunities will also be announced when entries open on  October 10, 2014.

This partnership between GetUp and Tropfest signals a creative new approach to campaigning on the Reef.
