The Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) today announced the finalists for the annual 2014Screen It competition, Australia’s largest competition for school-aged filmmakers, animators and game makers, now in its tenth year.

This year’s competition attracted 364 entries involving 1,518 students from across Australia, creating live-action films, computer games and animations to the theme, Reflection.

ACMI Screen Education Manager, Christine Evely said: “We congratulate all the young people who entered Screen It this year. Entries were outstanding and we wish our finalists the best of luck in the lead up to the announcement of the 2014 winners.”

Screen It is judged by a panel of industry professionals including Trollbridge director Daniel Knight, lecturer and director Andrew O’Keefe, animator Rebecca Hayes, Melbourne International Animation Film Festival director Malcolm Turner, and industry representatives from the Australian Children's Television Foundation, Victorian College of the Arts and Federation Square.

Screen It Ambassadors, Bajo and Hex, hosts of ABC2’s Good Game and Good Game Spawn Point, judged the awards for the best Primary and Secondary-student created video game in the country. Jason Schleifer from DreamWorks Animation will also join the finalist judging panel this year for the Animation categories.

Winners will be acknowledged at a glittering red carpet awards ceremony in December, each receiving a certificate, a trophy and a DVD prize pack courtesy of Madman Entertainment. Primary and Secondary Live Action and Animation category winners will also receive Crumpler products, whilst the Primary and Secondary Video Game category winner will receive a PS4 and a selection of games courtesy of Sony PlayStation. Along with great prizes for each category, the primary and secondary school with the Best Overall Entries will be recognised with a state-of-the-art NECprojector.

In addition, winning entries will be added to the Australian Mediatheque where ACMI visitors can view moving image works on demand. They will also be exhibited in ACMI’s Screen Worlds exhibition alongside some of the greatest filmmakers and game developers of all time, on ACMI’sGenerator education portal and on the ACMI website.

Unlike other student film competitions, Screen It is designed to provide rich cross-disciplinary curriculum outcomes for participants. As teachers start thinking of next year’s competition, they are encouraged to use the Resources devised by ACMI's experienced educators to assist with developing the theme, assist students to gain knowledge and skills around production processes, to register their class for online Screen It Video Conferences with ACMI Education staff, and to utilise Generator, ACMI's online creative tool to support the production process.

The winners will be announced on the ACMI website on Monday 24 November. The annual Screen It Awards will be held at ACMI in Melbourne on Friday 5 December 2014.
