AACTA Audience Choice nominees

The four nominees have been announced for the news.com.au Audience Choice Award for Most Memorable Moment, to be presented at the 2nd AACTA Awards.

Contending for the award are scenes from The Sapphires, Puberty Blues, The Voice and Howzat! Kerry Packer’s War.

The nomination of The Sapphires comes as no surprise as the film has achieved critical worldwide acclaim over the past year. Being set during the Vietnam War, it is nevertheless a feel good, romantic drama that received a ten minute standing ovation at Cannes. It is also nominated for all the AACTA awards for which it is eligible, out of the 14 up for grabs in the feature film category.

Puberty Blues is a TV series based on the novel by Gabrielle Carey and Kathy Lette. It follows two young girls growing up amidst the 1970s surf culture of Cronulla.

Capturing an audience’s heart and imagination in a contemporary setting, is the breakout performance of Rachael Leahcar on The Voice. She moved the nation to tears as a partially blind teen, winning the judges’ approval in a blind audition. Her rendition of ‘La Vie en Rose’ went to No. 11 on the itunes chart overnight. In another twist of irony, The Voice achieved a ratings record over The X-Factor and Australia’s Got Talent, both of which had rejected Leahcar.

The audience reveals a divergence in taste with the selection of a scene from Howzat! Kerry Packer’s War. A two-part mini series on Channel Nine, it tells the story of the revolution in cricket and TV sports coverage.

The four nominees achieved the most votes out of 16 Australian TV and film moments.

The AACTA Awards are to be broadcast on Network 10, January 30, 9.30pm.
