Women in Hollywood founder to visit Melbourne to discuss gender equality

Melissa Silverstein, founder and publisher of Women in Hollywood, a website that advocates for gender equality in the entertainment industry, will visit Melbourne later this month to discuss women in screen.

The free event, Why Gender Equality is Vital for Hollywood, will be presented by the Natalie Miller Fellowship (NMF) in association with the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI).

The evening will be moderated by NMF president and producer Sue Maslin (The Dressmaker).

Silverstein, who is also the co-founder and artistic director of the Athena Film Festival, will provide a comprehensive overview of the Hollywood eco-system including updated statistics on decision makers in Hollywood; the numbers of women behind the scenes and on screen; box office data on successful female films; and the growing difference between TV and film regarding women.

Her presentation will be used as a starting point for discussion about strategies for change that could be applied in the Australian screen industry as well as the US.

  1. Looking forward to this event. It’s astounding that in 2016 we still have to fight for gender equality. That in film there is less work for women and that ageism is also high on the agenda particularly for women.
    Last week I was interviewing female cinematographers. I want to have a male and female on board for my feature. I had to really push to get women to apply and I hope that changes. It is important that we encourage and mentor.
