The Show Me Shorts Film Festival today congratulated short filmmakers from New Zealand and Australia.
Festival Director Gina Dellabarca said, “Show Me Shorts has received hundreds of entries this year and the films are outstanding!”
“Not only have we received a wide variety, from ‘docu-mations’ to ‘splat-stick horrors’, but the majority of these short films also have a strong narrative and excellent production values. The art direction on some is of an impressive level, with incredible attention to detail. We can’t wait to show them to the New Zealand public come November.”
Show Me Shorts will announce its line-up of films on Thursday 25 September, but an early announcement has been made of two Kiwi films. The first is ‘Noise Control’ by Phill Simmonds, who won last year’s Show Me Shorts Best Film award. This new film is a hilarious animated documentary about a kindergarten’s pet rooster, which is shot by a noise controller called Mr. Wolf. The second early announcement is the World Premiere of ‘Chalk’ by student filmmaker Esther Cahill-Chiaroni. ‘Chalk’ is a delightfully fresh short drama about relationships starring Sara Wiseman and Jared Turner.
These two films will be strong contenders for the Best Film and Best Student Film awards respectively. Dellabarca says, “Australian and Kiwi film students are churning out shorts that are sometimes superior to those made by professionals. Students emerging from film schools are not only well versed in story telling, but also tech-savvy and confident mixing their media to capture the essence of their message.”
The Teza Show Me Shorts Opening/Awards Night will take place on Thursday 6 November in Auckland, with delicious iced tea cocktails for all. Tickets for this event will go on sale from the Academy Cinema on Wednesday 1 October.
