Gayby Baby Free Screening at Film Festival
Coffs Coast, NSW
One of the unique events in the inaugural Screenwave International Film Festival (SWIFF) program will be the special presentation screening of the new Australian documentary Gayby Baby (Rated PG), free for audiences to attend thanks to the support and sponsorship of Groundworks Youth Centre.
The film documents the lives of a number of Australian families with same-sex parents, told from the perspective of the children.
Gaby Baby was banned in NSW schools during school hours until just recently by the NSW Education Minister after initial community backlash. Similarly, after public outcry, the decision was reversed. The film has now received widespread media attention, screening at film festivals across the globe.
To make this film accessible to festival audiences, the festival includes two free screenings of Gayby Baby, one in Coffs Harbour (Jan 7, 12:30pm) and one in Bellingen (Jan 3rd, 2pm).
The film’s director, Maya Newell, will be in attendance for the Bellingen screening, where an audience Q&A session will take place after the film. Following the Coffs Harbour screening there will be a panel discussion including local same-sex parent families in our community.
“Gayby Baby’s Director, Maya Newell, has been travelling her film around the world. It will be great for audiences and great for local industry to have a filmmaker of her caliber be part of the inaugural festival,” stated SWIFF’s Artistic Director Kate Howat.
To reserve your free tickets to screening of Gayby Baby and to purchase tickets to other film sessions, visit www.swiff.com.au and follow the links through the film program. Book early to avoid disappointment – these sessions will sell out.
Screenwave International Film Festival runs from December 27th, 2015 to January 28th, 2016 with screenings across Coffs Harbour and Bellingen.
