Girl Germs, named after one of the original Riot Grrrl zines, is a special session for feminists of all ages on Saturday 13 September starting at 2 pm and ending with a screening of The Punk Singer from 4-6 pm.
Girls On Film Festival (GOFF) is all about the girl gang and that includes our teen dreamers, and feminists of all ages.
Girl Germs will feature live performances from the incredible Georgia Fields, Pikelet and Charm of Finches, who will speak about their experience as a girl in the music scene.
Girl Germs also features zine workshops from Bitch Please, A Zine Thing and Sticky Institute, DJing lessons, cosplayers, a unisex nail bar (Nailed It), and a special clubhouse called Wannabe, where you can talk to a bunch of babes about what what you reallywannabe – meet your heroes & high five your dreams.
Our “Wannabes” include writers Amy Gray, Kat Muscat, and Anna Barnes, broadcasters Claudia Long (SYN), GOFF’s own Tara Judah (JOY, RRR), and Fairy GOFFmothers Cerise Howard, Sarah-Jane Woulahan and Nakkiah Lui, video game designer Leena van Deventer of WIDGET, physicist and mathematician Catriona Wimberley, inventor Cynthia Lam, gang from Young Workers Victoria, and Screen Education’s Greta Parry.
The event will be hosted by Fairy GOFFmother Anna Barnes, bringing her special magic to a session that includes an all-ages screening of Sini Anderson’s The Punk Singer, an amazing documentary about the hero of Riot Grrrl, Kathleen Hanna.
Kathleen Hanna, lead singer of the punk band Bikini Kill and dance-punk trio Le Tigre, rose to national attention as the reluctant but never shy voice of the riot grrrl movement. She became one of the most famously outspoken feminist icons, a cultural lightning rod. Her critics wished she would just shut-up, and her fans hoped she never would. So in 2005, when Hanna stopped shouting, many wondered why. Through 20 years of archival footage and intimate interviews with Hanna, The Punk Singer takes viewers on a fascinating tour of contemporary music and offers a never-before-seen view into the life of this fearless leader.
Festival Director Karen Pickering notes “We’re so incredibly excited at GOFF HQ because all we want is for feminists of every age to feel like there are lots of us, that there are fun and amazing things happening, that we can fight our fight and party hardy, that activism is more than just megaphones and barricades, and that we’re all in this together. Learning about feminism through zines, music and hanging out with your mates is how we did it way back when, so we wanted to share some of the Riot Grrl magic with the new generation of feminists, who are schooling us in so many ways.”
Girl Germs is a unisex, all-ages event, with a special emphasis on young feminists. Saturday September 13, 2:00pm at Northcote Town Hall as part of Girls On Film Festival.
