Film and CG Buffs Get An Up Close and Personal Look at Digitizing the Real World
WHAT: Jaunt has teamed up with computer graphics expert and researcher Paul Debevec to create The Light Stage, a behind the scenes look through VR at the technology and research happening at The University of Southern California’s Institute for Creative Technologies.
Viewers will step inside the tenth-generation scanning room, Light Stage X, to see how 346 custom light surfaces scan, reflect, and capture high-res 3D models of faces. Then, go inside Light Stage 6 which features enough lights and cameras to digitize the entire human body. Sneak a peek at the mobile light stage created specifically for President Obama which was utilized to capture the first 3D presidential portrait in 2014, and hear anecdotes on the CG technology behind Benjamin Button, Avatar and other blockbuster hits.
Shot in the Graphics Laboratory at USC’s Institute for Creative Technologies, this piece takes viewers where most film, production and computer graphics professionals have never set foot.
