José Luis Borau, 82 min, Spain, 1975. Drama.
Released two months before Francisco Franco’s death, Furtivos was perceived as a metaphor for the Spanish society engendered by the dictatorship. The film is a rural drama that depicts the atavistic forest in which ruthless and jealous Saturna and her meek and oppressed son, a poacher, share their miserable destinies. The imposed peace that surrounds their lives barely smothers a ubiquitous throbbing of primeval brutality. When Milagros, a young and rebellious girl irrupts in their world, the most atrocious violence is unleashed. Like Goya’s black paintings, Furtivos reveals the eternal and the sublime hidden beneath stark horror. Beautifully photographed, this ummissable film is one of Bunuel’s favourites and considered one of the best Spanish films ever.
