This year’s Halloween marks Open Channel’s acclaimed screening event Love Your Work! showcasing outstanding short films from emerging and independent filmmakers.
Love Your Work! will be presented by Open Channel and Cinema Nova on Wednesday, October 31, from 6.30pm at the Nova, with special guest host actor and comedian Alan Brough (Spicks & Specks).
A record thirteen innovative short films, ranging from experimental drama to black comedy, have been selected for the 7th annual Love Your Work! Screening. All filmmakers must be Open Channel members to qualify for entry in Love Your Work! vying for a valuable prize pool of Audience Choice Awards including the Digital Pictures First Prize and the Lemac Cinematography Encouragement Award presented to an emerging cinematographer.
After much deliberation, this year’s Love Your Work! finalists are:
Carline Duffy (Director: Justin Olstein)
Postcard (Director: Maggie Fooke)
Black Button (Director: Lucas Crandles)
Last Days of Connie Hays (Director: Dana-Lee Mierowsky)
Hollow Bones (Director: Nicholas Verso)
The Apprentice (Director: Richard Greenhalgh)
Bob (Director: Anika Ervin-Ward)
Unleashed (Director: Tracey Sawyer)
Hour of Prayer (Director: Goran Stolevski)
Million Dollar Babes (Directors: Marianne Wallace-Crabbe & Maggie Fooke)
Nothing (Director: Prasan de Silva)
Bastard (Director: Eugene E-NRG)
Campsite (Director: Lucas Crandles)
This year’s short films present a diverse range of captivating themes and characters. Unleashed by student filmmaker Tracey Sawyer profiles Luke Hura, dog trainer to the stars, who ends up transforming people through innovative dog training techniques; Justin Olstein’s mockumentary Caroline Duffy chronicles the meteoric highs and lows of the career of this incandescent star of children’s pantomime theatre and features a cameo by Bud Tingwell.
Lucas Crandles’ Campsite is Melbourne’s answer to The Blair Witch Project; and Hour of Prayer presents a domestic drama set in the Middle East.
The popularity of Open Channel’s Love Your Work! screening has grown each year, with accolades from both the industry and audiences. ‘Love Your Work! is a celebration of Melbourne’s filmmaking talent,’ says Open Channel’s Executive Producer Gai Dunlop ‘Our members continue to dazzle us with their unique stories and visual flair. This event introduces many of these filmmakers to a wider audience. It’s always exciting to see the response!’
