The 23rd Melbourne Queer Film Festival (MQFF) came to a close on 25 March after 11 days of queer cinematic culture that included screening 169 films. The Festival recorded a whopping 39 sold-out sessions.
This year the Festival screened two Australian premiers of Melbourne-made feature films; Monster Pies written and directed by Lee Galea and Closing Night film Submerge, written by Kat Holmes and directed by Sophie O’Connor. Festival director Lisa Daniel noted that in her 15 years curating the festival only six Melbourne-made films have been featured, to have two in the same festival was an incredible achievement. This theme continued onto the award winners, with Australian filmmakers picking up five of the six awards on offer this year.
