Moonlight TV launches online film festival

The free online television network set up as a sister brand to Moonlight Cinema has launched its inaugural short film festival and is welcoming entries from all over Australia.

The Moonlight TV Short Film Festival is unique among Australian film festivals because it takes place online, where all entries are screened and voted on by the public.
2008 is the inaugural year of the Moonlight TV Short Film Festival. With three open rounds and a final ‘best of the best’ round, the festival runs from April to November, and is open to Australian-made short films made in any year and of every genre that are up to 10 minutes in length.

Successful entrants can win up to $8,500 out of a total prize pool of $20,000, making it one of the country’s most enticing film contests.

According to Moonlight TV General Manager Greg Petherick, the idea behind the short film festival is “to bring the art of the short film together with the opportunities created by broadband media access, and give Australian filmmakers a truly open platform to showcase their work. And because it’s an online festival, people all over the country can view the films.”

Moonlight TV is Australia’s newest free online television network. Launched in December 2007 as a sister brand to the immensely popular Moonlight Cinema, development of Moonlight TV commenced in 2006 with the acquisition of an extensive range of television content by the Becker Group, one of Australia’s leading independent distributors of television programs.
