Western Australian film Red Dog has been selected to premiere at the 61st Berlin International Film Festival.
The film has been chosen as an entrant in the Generation 14 plus category, the festival’s youth competition. It is one of 13 films competing in the same section.
"We are thrilled that Red Dog will now roam to Berlin,” said producer Nelson Woss in a statement.
The story of a charismatic canine hitchhiker that roamed the Western Australian outback in the 1970s, Red Dog is based on the novel of the same name by Louis De Bernières
Directed by Kriv Stenders, it boasts an ensemble cast that includes Keisha Castle-Hughes (Whale Rider), Rachael Taylor (Summer Coda), Luke Ford (Animal Kingdom) and Josh Lucas (Life As We Know It)
Red Dog was filmed in the Pilbara region of Western Australia and in parts of South Australia. It was produced with the assistance of ScreenWest and LotteryWest.
The Generation International Jury includes Australian director Rachel Perkins (Bran Nue Dae) and New Zealand director Taikia Waititi (Boy).
The festival runs from February 10-20. Red Dog will be released in Australia on April 21.
