At any given time, the team on a television series need a broad range of skills and expertise to get the best onscreen, especially in the high pressure worlds of live and factual or reality TV. AFTRS Open has some great TV courses coming up that will give you various skills and the confidence to be a valuable production team member.

In the Producing Live TV weekend intensive you will hear about all the elements of producing a live TV program. Field and Story Producing will develop the core skills to tell great stories in factual TV and TV Shooter Producer focuses on camera and audio skills for field producers.
Two new courses we are excited about are Editing for Factual TV and Challenge Producing with Caroline Spencer, which will give you an understanding of what it takes to put together challenges both in studio and on location for Reality TV. Plus TV Director's Assistant – An Introduction will give you a good insight into how the control room of a multicam studio works.

TELEVISION
Producing Live TV
Working in live television is one of the most exciting areas of the media. Whether it's News and Current Affairs, Sport, daily "magazine", Special Events or "Shiny Floor" grand finals, you're working with a huge team of people who know that everything they do is going to be seen by millions of people, and that there is no "take two" (25 – 26 May).

If you are interested in the world of TV Investigative Journalism, don't miss this series of masterclasses with some of the most experienced TV Journalists and producers in Australia. Six Wednesday evenings (29 May – 3 June).

TV Field and Story Producing
Field and Story Producing is a core skill for those working in Factual and Reality television. This course will upgrade your skills and help you to become a successful storyteller. Its focus is on the process of planning, shooting and post-producing engaging real stories for television (8 June – 11 July).

TV Shooter Producer Workshop
This course is designed for TV Producers, associate producers and researchers who have some production knowledge and experience but little or no camera expertise. It aims to familiarize course participants with the basic principles of recording quality picture and sound, with an emphasis on working in situations where they will have little control over the events they are filming (22 – 24 June).

Production Management for TV (Factual)
This ten evening course offers up-to-the-minute skills and insights for aspiring TV Production Managers and Production Co-Ordinators or even beginner PAs, Producers or APs looking to expand their knowledge. Leading industry professionals will share their experiences of the fundamental areas of TV in relation to reality, documentary, factual, studio shows, outside broadcast events and web content (10 July – 11 Sep).

Challenge Producing
A good Challenge Producer will have a high level of creativity PLUS excellent logistical skills. They will know how to stick to a budget, organise locations, have a good handle on all relevant WHS issues, and be able to pull together props, wardrobe, guests and experts at a moment's notice. Learn from experienced Executive Producer Caroline Spencer over two intensive and creative days ( (27 July and 3 Aug).

CAMERA
Advanced Lighting

Designed for cinematographers wanting to expand their knowledge in lighting for film and TV Drama, this three day course with professional actors will involve lighting a set for various genres under the tuition of a professional Cinematographer (22 – 24 June).

SCREEN BUSINESS & PRODUCING
Client Management and the Successful Corporate video

Looking for corporate clients to supplement your film and TV career? Working with corporate clients can be full of hurdles, but with the right information and strategy you can leverage these relationships into a steady stream of vital income for your production company (25 May).

Introduction to Film & TV Co-production
Want to learn how to put together a film or TV co-production? Golden Globe winner and Oscar nominated Producer Martin Brown (Romeo+Juliet, Moulin Rouge!) will guide you through the creative and administrative hurdles (and rewards) many filmmakers face when working with international partners (15 June).

Low Budget Features: How, Why & What Not to Do!
Tait Brady will lead you through the minefield of low budget production possibilities and pitfalls and give you insider tips and skills to make your low budget feature a success. Ideal for emerging feature film producers, writers, directors and line producers (29 – 30 June).

Screenwriting for Film: Online
This very popular online course, gives you a 'toolbox' for creating an industry-standard feature film script (27 May – 7 Aug, 10 weeks).

Alice Tynan's Film Club
From the comfort of your keyboard, join award winning film critic Alice Tynan for an exciting and engaging weekly look at film history, aesthetics and criticism with a series of feature films to expand your cinematic horizons – all online! (20 June – 8 August).

DOCUMENTARY
Documentary Fundamentals

Have an idea for a documentary but aren't sure where to start? This course with AFI nominated documentary Producer Dylan Blowen will teach you everything you need to know about documentaries and how to start moving your ideas into actual productions (11 – 12 May).

Documentary: The Art of Interview
Producer, Writer & Director Robin Hughes (Chequerboard, The Willesee Specials, Australian Biography) shares her four decades of experience to equip you with the skills necessary to develop powerful interviewing techniques (1 – 2 June).

RADIO
Radio Documentaries for Independent Producers

This hugely popular two-day course with award winning radio documentary producer Colm Mcnaughtion will provide you with the resources, storytelling skills and contacts to create long form radio documentaries and sell them to broadcasters around the world (1 – 2 June).

SOUND
Introduction to Scoring and Composing for the Screen
Over two weekends, you will have the opportunity to use your creative skills in AFTRS' state of the art facilities to compose a two minute piece of music and learn how to integrate it with a piece of film (3 -11 August).

Introduction to Location Sound Recording
This course, led by AFTRS Sound Lecturer Rod Pascoe, is designed for people who wish to learn the latest sound recording techniques used in capturing speech and sound effects using portable recording equipment (20 – 21 July).

WRITING
Explore Your Galaxy: Writing for Sc-Fi

This intensive, hands on workshop will explore the art of creating film and television stories for one of the most popular film genres in the world: Science Fiction (18 – 19 May).

Into The Box: Intro to Writing for Television
This course will introduce emerging writers and potential script editors to the experience of working in the fast-paced and challenging environment of series television (1 – 2 June).

EDITING & VFX
Colour Grading with Da Vinci Resolve

This 2-day lab-based course will explore the basics of colour correcting and grading using the industry standard DaVinci Resolve software. It is a hands-on workshop that encompasses both demonstrations and practical exercises in colour correcting and colour effects. We will be using the latest version of Da Vinci Resolve Lite (V9) for this course which is available as a free download (1 – 2 June).

Editing in Factual TV
The demand for good editors in the world of factual and reality television has risen dramatically in recent years, and the supply of quality editors never seems to meet demand. If you already have some technical editing skills but want to focus on the craft of editing, and how to separate yourself out from the pack, this course is for you (15,22,23 June).

Avid Media Composer 110: Video Effects
This two-day course is the second half of the Avid Media Composer accreditation program, and provides a solid foundation in Media Composer audio and video effects. (15,16 June)

DIRECTING
Four Day Music Video Workshop

Get a head start on your music video career with this hands-on course. You'll cover who's making videos (and why), what makes the Australian scene unique, how to pitch your idea, planning, budgeting (big and shoestring) and crewing (21 – 24 May).

Audition Process for Directors
25 year veteran Director Ian Watson (Wildside, Farscape, Dance Academy, Underbelly, Love My Way) will lead this course aimed at emerging Directors that want to be sure they are getting the most from their own audition process (13-14 July).

Intro to Directing TVC's
This two-day course will give aspiring TVC directors inside knowledge of the Industry and a good understanding of the skills required to have a career as a TVC Director (27 – 28 July).

WINTER SCHOOL
Winter School: Introduction to TV and Radio Presenting

This course combines our regular "Introduction to TV presenting" and "Announcing and Presenting" courses plus a day of our "Voice Over" course into one intensive week (24 – 28 June).

Winter School: Short Film Screenwriting
Students will learn from working Industry professionals and plenty of inspiring guest speakers to take their stories from initial idea through treatment and draft stage, to a finished, polished script ready to be pitched on the final day (1 – 5 July).

Winter School: Filmmaking
In this five day filmmaking intensive you will get busy in AFTRS state-of-the-art studio taking a winning script from 'Winter School: Short Film Screenwriting' from script to screen. Experienced industry filmmakers will guide you with lectures and fast paced practical exercises to conquer the major areas of Directing, Cinematography, and Post Production (8 -12 July).

Winter School: Introduction to Radio
In this five-day intensive you'll learn essential Radio skills from experienced radio industry professionals and gain the confidence to begin your career in radio. From roles and responsibilities and announcing and presentation, to editing and studio skills we've got it all covered (8 -12 July).
