Cinema Nova brings COUCH all the way from Seattle to Carlton!
For the first time outside of the USA, the Seattle-based Couchfest brings its unique program of open-minded short films to Australia, exclusive to Cinema Nova.
Equal parts awkward and awesome, this is a special selection of films from the 2009 festival in which moviegoers enjoyed films presented in strangers' living rooms. Couchfest was founded by Seattle filmmaker Craig Downing with the goal of sharing a love of film in an unpretentious environment. The festival aims to build kinship among movie lovers in a comfortable and cozy setting. Downing says “Ultimately, the hope is that you might interact, share and discover fellow lovers of film.”
Featuring shorts from the USA, Australia, Germany, England, Sweden and Spain, Craig has picked his favourites for Aussie viewers. “This is our first public screening in the world, a best of couchfest films, which is kind of rad.”
Founded in 2008, Couchfest has built a passionate following in Seattle thanks to its reliably high quality, entertaining film programs, and its "do-it-yourself" ethic. Cinema Nova, a regular supporter of short film programs, saw Couchfest as a natural for its selection of special events. “Craig Downing’s vision for quirky shorts in a comfy environment felt almost custom-made for Nova,” said Cinema Nova’s General Manager Kristian Connelly, “What attracted us to Couchfest was the excellent quality of ideas onshow. This selection is a must-see for old and new fans of short films alike.”
From the quirky (Outside The Box – about two men who try to discover the perfect way to come up with an idea); to the poignant (Prayers For Peace – about a man reflects on his brother's experience in Iraq); to the hilarious (A Film About Poo – a film about poo and the things you should and shouldn't do!)’; to the musical (Performance – an anthem that will have Lance Armstrong humming), Couchfest has something for everyone.
