Words from the City has been nominated for Best Documentary in the L’Oreal Paris 2007 AFI Awards.
Words from the City is a feature documentary exploring Australian hip hop through intimate and candid observations of some of the nation’s most potent and compelling MCs.
Filmed over one long hot summer, Words from the City focuses on the verbal artistry of a diverse group of artists at the forefront of Australian hip hop and explores the personal journeys that compel these MCs to step up to the mic. From social and political rage to personal and cultural storytelling, from laneways and parks to festivals and nightclubs, the film explores the diverse environments that shape these artists and their urge to make their voices heard. Featuring Wire MC, Hilltop Hoods, Downsyde, Layla, Koolism, Bliss n Eso, Maya Jupiter, TZU and MC Trey, Words from the City gives a unique insight into one of our most powerful and energetic creative forms.
Words from the City is one of the only Australian films to have been selected for each major international film festival in Australia. After hugely popular screenings at Adelaide and Sydney Film festivals, it will be screening at the upcoming Revelation Film Festival in Perth, Melbourne International Film Festival and Brisbane International Film Festival.
Written & Directed by Rhys Graham and Natasha Gadd. Edited by Paul Williams and Produced by Philippa Campey. Words from the City was financed by the Australian Film Commission, the Adelaide Film Festival 2007 Investment Fund and Film Victoria, in association with the ABC’s JTV and Madman Entertainment.
