SPAA Fringe welcomes Amy Hobby to the shores of Sydney where her tales of producing, directing and experience as a cinematographer, spanning 15 years, will be laid bare to empower, enable and evaluate.
Hobby joins an inspirational line up of key note speakers including Nathan Mayfield and Tracey Robertson of Hoodlum Active, a digital entertainment company renowned for consistently breaking new ground with multiplatform drama such as Fat Cow Motel and PS Trixi; rock ‘n roll guerilla filmmaker and Director of Japanese Surfing Road movie, Bondi Tsunami, Rachel Lucas; Designer and animator Brendan Cook who works with artists including The Cops, Paul Mac, Gotye and Smog; and Ben Batstone-Cunningham, co-author of Second Life: The Official Guide, and a former Linden Lab programmer and scripting expert.
As a producer, Amy Hobby was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for producing Secretary, starring James Spader and Maggie Gyllenhaal. Released by Lion’s Gate, Secretary won the Special Jury Prize at the 2002 Sundance Film Festival and an Independent Spirit Award for Best First Screenplay. Among her other producing credits are Severed Ways; The Norse Discovery of America which will be released by Magnolia Films in Spring 2008; Thirteen Conversations About One Thing starring Matthew McConaughey and John Turturro, released by Sony Pictures Classics; Hamlet, starring Ethan Hawke, Sam Shepard, and Bill Murray, featured on numerous critics’ Top 10 Lists for 2000, distributed by Miramax Films; Sunday, winner of the 1997 Sundance Film Festival Grand Jury Prize, Deauville Film Festival Winner, and selected for Un Certain Regard at Cannes and New Directors/New Films in New York; and Nadja, executive produced by David Lynch and released by October Films.
Hobby is currently producing Steven Soderbergh’s new documentary film Spalding Gray: The Last Monolog about the life of monologist Spalding Gray, Third Girl from the Left based on the acclaimed novel of the same name by Martha Southgate; The documentary Live at the Fillmore East to be directed by Leon Gast (Academy Award winner for When We Were Kings) about legendary rock promoter Bill Graham; and the feature Nuclear Family which she is hoping to shoot in Western Australia in 2008.
Hobby was founder and President of double A films, an independent feature film production company, from 1995 to 2002. Currently, she is an in-house feature film consultant for the commercial company Washington Square Films ( http://www.wsfilms.com/ ). Prior to producing, Hobby was an award-winning photographer, cinematographer and camera assistant on feature films.
