NZTV has acquired the Australian appisode series Hunter n Hornet for their on-demand catalogue.

The Screen Australia multiplatform funded series’ notable notches on the belt include an ADG Online directing win for director/creator Sonny Vrebac as well as being a finalist in the C21 short form awards and finalist for the NYTVF drawcard development deal with Orchard TV.

The show centres around two lovelorn losers who are too scared to talk to girls, so they resort to practicing seduction routines on one another in order to end their womenless lives.

Vrebac said the response to the series had been great.

"The show has travelled all around the world and attracted several distribution offers, as well as development interest for a TV series," he said.

"We’re now looking for the right fit with the TV version, since the bulk of the action is set in LA.

“It’s oddly appropriate that this NZTV deal has come through since the concept is partly influenced by our kiwi cuzzies Flight of the Conchords, mixed together with the intelligence of Dumb and Dumber

He said it was ludicrous, edgy, fun with a great family of characters.

"We’re pretty confident it will find the right home,” he said.

Online series stars NIDA graduates Aljin Abella (Power Rangers, Ali’s Wedding, Neighbours) and Sonny Vrebac (Sleeping Beauty, Home & Away, Black Balloon) with cameo appearances from Laura Dundovic (Miss Universe Finalist, Ruben Guthrie and Host of Dating in the Dark) and Emily Rose Brenan (Legend of Gavin Tanner and Bell Shakespear’s Taming of the Shrew).

TVNZ digital programmer, Jordan Yee, said:  “We believe that Hunter n Hornet will be a welcome addition to TVNZ Shorts, expanding the diverse range of short shows we have available.”

The online series is released on the June 6 on NZTV and the Apple TV app comes out June 1.
