Press release from Two Little Indians
Brisbane Writer/Producer James Greville has won the prestigious Monte Miller Award for the best unproduced feature length screenplay at the Australian Writers Guild Awards (AWGIES) held last Friday August 28 in Sydney. Box is the story of a teenage street kid who lives secretly in a West End boxing gym and manages to turn his life around by training to be a professional fighter. The script was developed with assistance from the Australian Film Commission and edited by novelist and screenwriter Phillip Gwynne (Aussie Rules). The film is set and will be shot entirely in Brisbane’s West End area.
Box will be the feature film debut for Director Tori Garrett, who won the Best Director award at the Australian Directors Guild Awards in 2007 for her short The Barrows which was also written by James Greville..
Todd Fellman (Daybreakers) is Producing with Greville. The project is currently in the early stages of pre-production with Nikki Barrett handling casting. Indiana Evans (H2O, Home and Away) is currently attached to play one of the key roles but the Producers are still considering options for the lead, Eugene, the young 15-16 year old boxer.
Box is a story inspired by time spent training at the West End Boxing Gym, with owner, Harry Costi, who lends his name to the mentor character in the film.
James Greville said;
“ You don’t really set out to win an award for best “unproduced” screenplay, but it is fantastic to be acknowledged by the best writers in the country and to receive this type of validation after all the hard work we’ve put in to the script and getting this project off the ground.
“ The awards night was a great experience. I had several of the judges come up to me, compliment me on the script, and tell me they can’t wait to see it on the big screen.. We’ve had such positive feedback and strong support for the project, from amazing crew and cast. I’m looking forward to finalizing our financing and distribution as soon as possible as we plan to commence official pre-production by the end of the year and shoot in January/February.
