Facade begins filming in Perth

Press release from Buzz Communications

Bolderpictures today commenced principal photography of its feature-length movie Façade.

Façade is a truthful and affective drama circling around the ever-shifting pattern of sexual politics, shedding light on both the fears and desires of men and women as they find the need to love and be loved.

Established in 2008 by Yu-Hsiu Camille Chen and Peter Thomas, Bolderpictures is an independent film production company with offices in Perth, Australia and Shanghai, China. The company brings together the best filmmaking resources the region has to offer with the aim of producing quality feature films that appeal to both Western and Asian markets.

The entire film is being shot in Perth, Western Australia, on RED ONE format using primarily local cast and crew.

As Director and Writer, Chen takes great pride in the fact that Façade is an actors’ piece.

“Façade is about characters and their stories.  Performance takes the ultimate front row in this project; everything else is in place to serve the actors and their performance.”

“That said, we have a great crew onboard.  I was particularly excited when Jason Thomas agreed to be our Director of Photography,” said Chen.

Thomas is a Perth-based cinematographer with over 19 years experience in Australia and overseas; most recently as Director of Photography on the soon-to-be-released Australian feature film, The Sculptor.

“While the concept of the film comes through me, one person, it will be the team who brings it to life.  As such we have deliberately chosen to work with a small yet dynamic crew – all multi-skilled and multi-tasking – allowing us to move quickly and efficiently,” said Chen

Façade is Bolderpictures’ first feature length film and a natural progression from Chen’s 2009 Cannes Short Film Corner submission, Conscience.

“Filmmaking for me is my way of asking questions.  I want to ask simple questions, but meaningful ones, such as how do we love?  And why do we love?”

“This is my passion.  I have an intense curiosity about people and the essence deep inside each of us.”

“For that reason, I found the casting process both exhilarating and challenging.  Some choices came so naturally, like a lightening strike, while others were the result of a long torturous search,” said Chen.

Façade features a number of stage and screen veterans – James Hagan (Phantom of the Opera, Francis Ford Coppela’s Wind, All Saints, GP, Police Rescue, The Dodger, Stark, Backburner; Headstart); Simon Lockwood (Ron Howard’s The Da Vinci Code, Two Fists, One Heart, 24 Hours in London, The Bill, Eastenders, video clips for Basement Jaxx); Nicolla Bartlett – Ship To Shore II, The Gift, Parallax, Rapture of the Deep); Melanie Munt (The Director’s Cut, Esoterica, Alex, Sea Patrol, All Saints, Lockie Leonard); Scott Jackson (Air Australia, 3 Acts of Murder, Bitter Art); Christie Sistrunk (Neighbours, Lockie Leonard, Halifax f.p., Little Boxes, State Coroner) – as well as a up-and-coming stars, Arielle Gray (Esoterica); Nina Deaslley (Best Actress Equity Guild Awards 2007); Annabelle Tan (various China Central TV Station movies and television series); Whitney Richards; and Nick Candy.

Filming of Façade will take place in and around Perth throughout December, before being submitted to the prestigious French film festival, Festival De Cannes in the New Year.
