The NSW Government has helped secure visual effects work on the action fantasy film – Sucker Punch – creating work for 75 visual effects specialists, Minister for State Development Ian Macdonald said.
Mr Macdonald said the large budget US feature was currently shooting in Vancouver but Warner Bros. has engaged Sydney company Animal Logic to undertake a significant visual effects sequence.
The NSW Government has helped secure the work for Sydney with assistance from the Film and Television Industry Attraction Fund.
“Animal Logic is one of the world’s leading animation and visual effects studios whose credits include the Academy Award-winning Happy Feet,” Mr Macdonald said.
“Sucker Punch is being directed by Zack Snyder who is also directing the feature film Guardians of Ga’ Hoole, which is being produced by Animal Logic in Sydney.
“Animal Logic’s work on Sucker Punch is further testimony to the international reputation of Sydney as a leading location for film and television visual effects work.
“NSW is a leader in the area of post-production and digital and visual effects, generating over $360 million worth of work over the past four years (Source: Screen Australia) representing two thirds of the Australian total.
“Winning the work on Sucker Punch will help ensure continuity in NSW’s post, digital and visual effects (PDV) area at a time when the high Australian dollar and the contraction in the international market is making it difficult for local companies to secure international work.
“Attracting this visual effects work will facilitate the development and improvement of visual effects tools for creating digital humans and creature animation in a live action context. “It will also result in enhanced skills capabilities and opportunities for partnerships on subsequent visual effects productions.”
