Don Hany, Andrew McFarlane join cast of ‘Secret City: Under the Eagle’

Don Hany will star as the Australian PM in Foxtel’s upcoming Secret City: Under the Eagle, with Andrew McFarlane to also join the cast as air chief marshall.

The second season of the Matchbox Pictures-produced political thriller is currently filming in Sydney following a location shoot in Canberra. Other newly announced cast members are Joel Tobeck, who plays the defense minister; Christopher Kirby, who plays the US Ambassador to Australia; Tom Wren, who plays an energy lobbyist and Laura Gordon, who will star as a drone pilot.

They join the previously announced cast of Anna Torv, Jacki Weaver, Danielle Cormack, Rob Collins, Sacha Horler, Marcus Graham and Justin Smith.

Produced by Stephen Corvini, Secret City: Under the Eagle picks up with Harriet Dunkley (Torv) not long out of prison after writing a story which which broke the government’s draconian Safer Australia rules. Now working for an independent MP (Cormack), Dunkley discovers a military and political cover-up with Catriona Bailey’s (Weaver) fingerprints all over it. What she unearths is a military program so secret not even the Prime Minister knows about, raising the question of who is really running the country.

Showrunner Matt Cameron and Belinda Chayko, who both wrote for the first season, wrote two episodes each, while Elise McCredie wrote one and Cameron co-wrote the other with playwright Angela Betzien. Tony Krawitz and Daniel Nettheim are directing three episodes each.

EPs are Foxtel’s head of drama Penny Win and drama development executive Carly Heaton, Penny Chapman from Matchbox and Cameron.

The series will air on Foxtel’s showcase channel, while NBCUniversal International Distribution is handling international distribution.
