Peter Finch embodies the very spirit of the Australian actor, kicking aside pretence and self-importance in favour of a rugged earthiness and cutting self-deprecation. The Peter Finch Lifetime Achievement Award is presented to Australian actors, actresses, writers, directors, producers or technicians who embody the same kind of spirit as this great actor: self possession, honesty, earthiness, charisma, longevity and a resolute toughness. The award – through Finch’s vagabond spirit and experience working in many film communities throughout the world – also represents the connections between the Australian, British and US film industries, and Filmink’s commitment to covering films from around the world.

This year, we are very happy to announce actor Colin Friels as this year’s recipient of The Peter Finch Lifetime Achievement Award. Since his debut in the 1981 thriller Hoodwink, through eye catching performances in local flicks such as Monkey Grip, Malcolm, Ground Zero, High Tide, Dingo, Angel Baby, Mr. Reliable, Tom White, Solo and The Book Of Revelation; television work on Water Rats, Bastard Boys, My Husband My Killer, The Last Man Hanged and For The Term Of His Natural Life; and international productions Class Action, Darkman, A Good Man In Africa and Dark City, Friels has firmly established himself as one of this country’s finest talents.

‘Acting gives me sleepless nights, pimples, rashes, anxiety, but also a deep satisfaction somehow. It makes you feel more…human. It’s a way of making a connection.’
Colin Friels

We’re all privileged that Friels chooses to make that connection with us, and The Peter Finch Lifetime Achievement Award couldn’t go to a more deserving recipient.

Keep an eye out on the red carpet for Presenters: Academy Award® nominee Keisha Castle-Hughes (The Whale Rider, Hey Hey It’s Esther Blueburger), Sun Park (The Jammed, Hi5), Joel Edgerton (The Square, $9.99, Secret Life of Us), Nash Edgerton (The Square), Danielle Catanzariti (Hey Hey It’s Esther Blueburger, Blackbird), Diana Glenn (Black Water, Satisfaction, The Oyster Farmer), David Field (Chopper, West,  Two Hands) Luke Ford (The Black Balloon, The Mummy 3), and Chris Taylor from The Chasers War on Everything.
