The winners have been announced at the annual Short & Sweet competition, and the Actor’s College of Theatre and Television has been recognised through its winning students and teachers, who took part in this extremely fierce and entertaining event.
The People’s Choice Award was presented to Jo Turner for his excellent Stallion of Death. Taking the audience and judges by storm, Turner’s adept Direction was a clear choice for receiving this recognition. Turner’s extensive background in comedy and physical theatre, and writing and directing multiple shows blends a unique experience that was clearly on display at Short & Sweet.
This same experience has been harnessed by the Actor’s College of Theatre and Television, where Turner, as Diploma Tutor and Director of student productions, works primarily in the areas of improvisation, comedy, physical approaches to acting and creating new work. He also runs workshops in play building, clown, melodrama, bouffon, neutral mask and movement.
Terror on the Northside, Written and Directed by Venetia Taylor has taken the laurels for Best Overall Production, which starred ACTT graduate Beejan Olfat. Taylor’s delicious satire on racism and romance won the judges’ vote, with the award presented by the Minster for the Arts the Honourable Peter Garrett AM. After graduating in 2001 from ACTT Youth Activate course, Olfat has since founded the Roar Theatre Company, has worked for the Melbourne Theatre Company in The History Boys and is also an award winning playwright, having won the Sydney Theatre Company’s Young Playwright Award in 2003 and 2004.
The Actor’s College of Theatre and Television is Australia’s leading independent training facility for acting, musical theatre and stage production. Providing innovative education and performance guidance, ACTT strive to empower people in the arts, business and life.
In 2008 ACTT will be the first private acting school in NSW to be eligible for Fee Help, tapping into government financial support for all full time students, and confirming the schools position as one of the countries leading educational facilities.
Enrolments are currently open and auditions are being held for courses beginning in February and March 2008. For people who are seeking a career path in the performing arts, ACTT offers amazing opportunities that have a proven track record for successfully launching their graduates into the acting and theatre production world.
