Umbrella picks up Camino documentary

Boutique Australian entertainment distributor Umbrella Entertainment has acquired Walking the Camino: Six Ways to Santiago, the award-winning documentary film by US director/producer Lydia B. Smith.

The deal was negotiated by Smith, Adam McAree of Future Films Education and Jeff Harrison, MD of Umbrella Entertainment.

Harrison said, “Umbrella is very pleased with this acquisition and trusts the film reaches out to the audience of Camino aficionados, spiritual seekers, the devoutly religious, outdoors and hiking lovers, at the back of the success of Emilio Estevez’s The Way starring Martin Sheen who calls it a ‘brilliant documentary.’”

Walking the Camino is an insanely ambitious, independently produced film that takes an in-depth and close up look at the motivations behind six pilgrims who decide to walk 500 miles across Spain on the ancient Camino de Santiago path equipped with only a backpack, a pair of boots, and an open mind.

The film captures the trials and tribulations of the featured pilgrims who run the gamut of ages (from 3 years to 73) as well as nationalities, religious backgrounds and life experiences.

Smith said: “Australia/NZ is one of the fastest growing communities on the Camino. When Umbrella approached us to distribute the film, the first thing I did was reach out to Emilio Estevez. He had nothing but great things to say about Umbrella and what a great job they did distributing The Way. I look forward to a great partnership with Umbrella Entertainment.”
