PALACE ADDS CINE LATINO: A NEW FESTIVAL OF LATIN AMERICAN CINEMA TO THE CINEMA CALENDAR THIS AUGUST
Palace Cinemas is proud to announce the launch of a new festival on Australia’s screen landscape with an annual event designed to showcase diverse cinematic offerings from across Latin America – CINE LATINO: A New Festival of Latin American Cinema.
Festival Founder Antonio Zeccola has long been watching and admiring marvellous Latin American films at international film festivals from Cannes to Berlin, and all the way to Ventana Sur (the main Latin American Film Market) in Argentina. He identified that only a hand full were picked up by the international film festivals, and almost none were released theatrically, and as such felt there was a market for these films to be screened nationally. This will be the first national presentation dedicated to Latin American cinema in Australia, with a scope to include films from Mexico to Brazil, from Uruguay to Venezuela, from Chile to Guatemala, and everything in between.
Former Melbourne Latin American Film Festival Director Alex Castro will helm the festival which is programmed by a panel of experienced curators.
Born in Chile, Alex came to Australia with his family at the age of three. A keen film lover from an early age, he pursued cinema studies at the Australian National University in Canberra and later at La Trobe University in Melbourne.
In 1999 Alex co-founded Melbourne Filmoteca: Spanish & Latin American Film Group, which continues to host monthly screenings at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image. Following an extensive trip in 2002-2003 where he attended Latin American film festivals in Argentina, Colombia and the United States, Alex founded and was Director of the Melbourne Latin American Film Festival from 2004 to 2007.
Speaking of CINE LATINO, he said, “Latin America is made up of 20 Spanish and Portuguese-speaking countries with over 600 million people. Many Latin Americans live all over the world, including Australia. More and more Australians travel there every year, drawn by its rich and vibrant culture. Latin American cinema is a powerful emerging voice in world cinema; and CINE LATINO is a wonderful way to share its sights, sounds and stories with Australian audiences."
The festival will screen exclusively at Palace Cinemas in these cities:
Sydney: Tues 9 – Wed 24 August. Palace Norton St and Palace Verona.
Melbourne: Wed 17 – Wed 31 August. Palace Cinema Como and Palace Westgarth.
Canberra: Tues 16 – Wed 31 August. Palace Electric.
Brisbane: Fri 12 – Wed 24 August. Palace Centro & Barracks.
