Asia Pacific Screen Awards has commissioned one of Australia’s most highly regarded glass artists, Queenslander Joanna Bone, to create the awards to be presented to winners at the second annual Asia Pacific Screen Awards ceremony.
The Asia Pacific Screen Awards ceremony will be held on November 11 at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre, Queensland, Australia, with more than 500 national and international guests in attendance.
Joanna Bone also created the stunning vessels presented at the inaugural Asia Pacific Screen Awards, held on the Gold Coast last November.
Ms Bone has been commissioned by the Asia Pacific Screen Awards (APSA), with curatorial advice from the Queensland Art Gallery.
“The vessels created by Joanna last year were incredibly beautiful and received with considerable appreciation by the APSA winners. They are exquisite works of art,” said Des Power, Chairman of the Asia Pacific Screen Awards.
“One of her vessels, presented to Iranian director Kioumars Pourahmad who accepted the Jury Grand Prize for the film Night Bus, is now part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Iran. In time, I believe these Awards will come to be an internationally recognised and potent symbol of the creativity and talent of filmmakers from Asia-Pacific.
“This year, Joanna has taken her inspiration from the values embodied by APSA – community, creative energy, passion, diversity – resulting in vessels which are richly textured and coloured and evocative of our region.”
Joanna is the only Queenslander to win Australia and New Zealand’s top award for glass artists, the Ranamok Glass Prize, in 2005. In 2000, she was the overall winner of the Royal Overseas League Trophy Competition (London) and was commissioned to make the trophy for the League’s Music Awards.
Originally from the UK, Joanna began her studies at Portsmouth Art School. She studied glass design at Wolverhampton University in the Midlands, the traditional home of glass makers in Britain, and completed a Master’s Degree in Glass and Ceramics at The Royal College of Art, London.
Brisbane-based, Joanna made Queensland her home in 2002.
Her work has been represented in numerous exhibitions in the UK and Australia, and in galleries including The Victoria & Albert Museum London, Object Gallery Sydney, Oxford Gallery Oxford, Quadrivium Gallery Sydney, Queensland Art Gallery, Craft Queensland, the Glass Artists Gallery in Sydney and Marks & Gardner Gallery, Mt Tamborine, Qld.
The Asia Pacific Screen Awards – the APSAs – is a collaboration with CNN International, UNESCO and FIAPF – International Federation of Film Producers Associations and is an international cultural initiative to acclaim films that best reflect their cultural origins and demonstrate cinematic excellence.
