Despite falling over 40 per cent, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 remains on top of the box office, earning almost $5 million over the weekend; an average of $7,875 per screen. The Disney title stars Australia’s Elizabeth Debicki and has grossed $23 million in just two weeks.
Universal’s horror Get Out has debuted in second place, ringing up $1.9 million from 345 screens. With previews, the debut feature from comedian-turned-director Jordan Peele has made just under $2.9 million.
eOne tearjerker A Dog’s Purpose, which stars Dennis Quaid, has opened on 271 screens to make $1.2 million.
Behind it was The Fate of the Furious, which dropped some 46 per cent to take $928,792 over its fourth weekend. The Universal film now sits on $27.4 million overall.
Now in its third week, Roadshow’s Going In Style brought in $580,556, taking its cume to $3.8 million.
Showing on just 51 screens, the Hindi version of Baahubali 2: The Conclusion, distributed by Eros Australia, made $534,562 over its second weekend. Directed by SS Rajamouli, these figures earned this edition of the action film the highest screen average of the week: $10,482. Overall, the film has made $1.8 million.
Disney’s Beauty and the Beast fell 48 per cent over its seventh weekend to earn $447,205, bringing its cume to $47 million.
Roadshow’s war drama The Zookeeper’s Wife, directed by New Zealand’s Niki Caro, debuted on 72 screens to bring in $289,150.
The Tamil/Telegu/Malayalam version of Baahubali 2: The Conclusion, which is distributed by Southern Star, took $253,045 from 47 screens. It now sits on $949,087 after two weeks.
Rounding out the top ten was Crossroads’ The Case for Christ which debuted on $238,073 from 37 screens.
In limited release, eOne’s Berlin Syndrome took $24,852 from 21 screens. Directed by Cate Shortland, the film has grossed $188,032 in three weeks.
StudioCanal’s Kiwi title Pork Pie opened on $11,742 from 21 screens. With previews, the debut feature from Matt Murphy – son of the original Goodbye Pork Pie director Geoff Murphy – has made $78,665.
Neil Triffett’s debut feature EMO the Musical, distributed by Bonsai Films, also opened this week, earning $5,394 from nine screens.
Transmission’s Brett Whiteley documentary, Whiteley – which opens this Thursday – has made $6,485 from previews.
