FTI are pleased to announce that nominations for The 28th Annual West Australian Screen Awards (WASAs) are now open.
Entries are invited from West Australian filmmakers and game developers across 33 categories and will close at 5pm on Monday, April 4.
Nominees will be announced at a function in late May and the 28th Annual WASAs will be held on Monday 4 July 2016 at the prestigious Heath Ledger Theatre at the State Theatre Centre of Western Australia.
Winners will receive the beautiful custom-made Geoffrey Drake-Brockman official WASA trophy and a cash prize of $5000 will once again be awarded to the Young Filmmaker of the Year.
"The value of this award lives within its ability to empower other emerging filmmakers to feel they can achieve their ambitions, because the feat of beginning a career becomes more manageable when we feel someone has tackled it before us. A spotlight of this nature allowed me to meet more people within the film community, feel the enormous support they offer, and remember to whittle the pressures of our aspirations down to a series of steps that we must collectively be brave to undertake," said Lauren Brunswick, Winner, 2015 Young Filmmaker of the Year.
In 2015, FTI attracted 479 entries from 162 screen projects across 33 categories, and are expecting to break this record in 2016 with the success of WA films over the past year.
The last 12 months have been huge for WA film with features such as Other Life (Jessica De Gouw), Jasper Jones (Hugo Weaving, Toni Collette), A Few Less Men (Xavier Samuel, Kris Marshall) and Bad Girl (Samara Weaving) all possible contenders.
Former WASA winners include some of Australia’s most prominent screen practitioners such as Nelson Woss (Red Dog), Elissa Down (The Black Balloon), Zak Hilditch (These Final Hours), James Bogle (Lockie Leonard, The Circuit, Closed for Winter), Sue Taylor (The Tree, Last Train to Freo), Myles Pollard (Drift) as well as a who’s who of the next generation of household names including Lauren Elliott, Ben Young, Emilia Jolakoska, Antony Webb and seasoned professionals including Kim Lord, Laurie Silvestren, and Torstein Dyrting.
The 2016 red carpet event will feature VIP guests, world-class service, delicious canapés and premium beverages. Over 500 film industry leaders, Western Australian screen practitioners, media, sponsors and government officials will come together to celebrate the very best in West Australian screen production.
The WASAs celebrate the vibrancy of the WA screen sector, connecting screen practitioners of all disciplines; film, television, online and interactive games, honouring high achievement, local production, dynamic content and key individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to the West Australian industry.

FTI enhances the vibrancy of the WA Screen Sector by providing skills and career development, facilitating professional networking opportunities, and production development and support. The WASAs connect audiences with WA screen content and WA screen practitioners with each other.
The 28th Annual WASAs are presented in conjunction with the Revelation Perth International Film Festival (7 – 17 July 2016).
