Jocelyn Moorhouse's The Dressmaker has been nominated in 12 categories at the 5th AACTA Awards, ahead of George Miller's Mad Max: Fury Road with 11 and eight for Jeremy Sims' Last Cab to Darwin.
Neil Armfield's Holding the Man scored six nominations and Tony Ayres' Cut Snake and Rob Connolly's Paper Planes both received five.
In the TV categories Peter Allen-Not the Boy Next Door leads the field with 10 nods followed by Deadline Gallipoli and The Secret River (both 8), Redfern Now- Promise Me (7) and Banished (5).
The contenders for best TV documentary are Between a Frock and a Hard Place, The Cambodian Space Project- Not Easy Rock ‘n’ Roll, The Killing Season (all ABC) and Prison Songs (SBS).
The nominees for best feature length doc had been announced. With today’s announcement of the craft categories, Only the Dead and Prison Songs are now up for a total of five awards. The Killing Season and Sherpa both got four noms and The Cambodian Space Project- Not Easy Rock ‘n’ Roll received three.
In all, 11 features, 31 TV productions and 11 feature docs are in contention for recognition at the awards which will be presented in Sydney on December 9, broadcast on the Seven Network.
The five contenders for best film are The Dressmaker, Holding the Man, Last Cab to Darwin, Mad Max: Fury Road and Paper Planes.
Nominated for best direction are Jocelyn Moorhouse, Neil Armfield, Jeremy Sims and George Miller.
Last Cab to Darwin’s Michael Caton, Holding the Man’s Ryan Corr, Cut Snake’s Sullivan Stapleton and Ruben Guthrie’s Patrick Brammall will square off for best lead actor. It would be the first win for Caton, who was nominated for an AFI award for The Castle.
Up for best lead actress are The Dressmaker’s Kate Winslet, Fury Road’s Charlize Theron, Now Add Honey’s Robyn Butler and Last Cab to Darwin’s Ningali Lawford-Wolf.
Last Cab’s Mark Coles Smith, Ruben Guthrie’s Alex Dimitriades, Holding the Man’s Anthony LaPaglia and The Dressmaker’s Hugo Weaving will compete for best supporting actor.
Nominated for best supporting actress are The Dressmaker’s Judy Davis and Sarah Snook, Last Cab’s Emma Hamilton and Paper Planes’ Deborah Mailman.
Mailman and Snook are also nominated for best lead actress in a TV drama for Redfern Now-Promise Me and The Secret River, along with Pamela Rabe for Wentworth series 3 and Peta Sergeant for House of Hancock.
The best TV drama series nominees are Glitch, Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries season 3, Love Child season 2 and Wentworth series 3.
Newcomer Joel Jackson receieved two nods for best lead actor in a TV drama for the Peter Allen miniseries and Deadline Gallipoli, together with Wayne Blair for the Redfern Now telepic and Oliver Jackson-Cohen for The Secret River.
For best TV comedy series the contenders are Sammy J & Randy in Ricketts Lane, Mad as Hell, Utopia and Danger 5 series 2.
Little Lunch, The Adventures of Figaro Pho, Nowhere Boy series 2 and Ready for This are vying for best children's series.
Real Housewives of Melbourne season 2, The Voice Australia, My Kitchen Rules, The X Factor and MasterChef Australia are up for best reality program.
