Vale Joan Levy

The Australian Writers’ Guild is saddened to have heard the news of the passing of writer and AWG Life Member Joan Levy.

Joan Levy was a lovely lady, well remembered from our earliest television days as a script writer for Australian television.

In 1968, Australia's first big television success was the ever popular Skippy, the Bush Kangaroo. Joan wrote several scripts for that series, and many of those children watching then, enjoy telling their grandchildren today about our much loved kangaroo.

Joan and husband Walter were often involved in early Australian Writers' Guild events.

At the same time Joan had another great interest – classical music. She had a very close friendship with concert pianist Hepzibar Menuhin, the sister of world famous violinist, Yuhudi Menuhin.

In fact, Joan’s name is mentioned in Hepzibar’s biography on the internet. Some years later Joan and Walter’s son, Curtis became a leading film director and producer, going on to win praise for much of his work on the prize winning documentary, that he directed and produced, called Hepzibar.
