WINNERS ANNOUNCED IN AUSTRALIAN PRODUCTION DESIGN GUILD AWARDS

THE GREAT GATSBY & THE SAPPHIRES SHARE FEATURE FILM DESIGN PRIZE
KIM CARPENTER AM RECIPIENT OF ‘OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTION’ AWARD

Winners were announced this evening in the annual APDG Awards at a ceremony hosted by Phil Scott held at Event Cinemas Bondi Junction. The Awards celebrate the work of designers across film, television, live performance and interactive media.

The Docklands Studios Melbourne Award for Design on a Feature Film was shared by two feature films – THE SAPPHIRES awarded to Melinda Doring, Janie Parker & Glen W Johnson and THE GREAT GATSBY, awarded to Catherine Martin, Karen Murphy & Ian Gracie.

THE GREAT GATSBY picked up five further awards – the WYSIWYG 3D Award for Visual Effects Design presented to Catherine Martin, Chris Godfrey, Chris Tangney & Andy Brown, the Illusions Award for Stage and Screen Craft went to Rosie Boylan, the MEAA Award for Set Decoration on a Feature Film to Beverley Dunn, the Hero Frock Hire Award for Costume Design for Screen awarded to Catherine Martin & Silvana Azzi Heras, and the MAC Cosmetics Awards for Make-up and Prosthetic Make-up Design presented to Lesley Vanderwalt, Maurizio Silvi & Kerry Warn.

In the realm of live performance, the APDG Award for Set Design for Stage was awarded to Peter England for KING KONG, and the Production Resource Group Award for Lighting Design for Stage or Event was presented to Nick Schlieper for FACE TO FACE.

This year, the Australian Production Design Guild celebrates and acknowledges the life and work of leading Australian stage and screen designer Jennie Tate, by naming one of the APDG Awards for excellence The Jennie Tate Award for Costume Design for Stage – sponsored by HLA Management. The category was tied, and awards went to both Jennifer Irwin for TERRAIN and Julie Lynch for CARMEN.

In television categories, the Next Printing Award for Design on a TV Production was presented to Dan Patmore for MY KITCHEN RULES – Series 4, and the APGD Award for Design on a TV Drama went to Carrie Kennedy, Adele Flere, Kate Russell & Rob Molnar for DR BLAKE MURDER MYSTERIES – Series 1.

Further awards recognising the breadth of design across the industry included the Event Cinemas Award for Title Design presented to Breeder for ANALOGUE/DIGITAL BRISBANE 2013, the Autodesk Award for Design on a Short Film to Jessica Meyer, Sarah Spackman, Brylan Stewart & Taphyl Stewart for THE HOARDERS, the AFTRS Award for Student Design went to Laura Murray for SPIRIT HARBOUR, and the Photoplay Award for Design on an Advertisement was awarded to George Liddle for TASMANIA TOURISM.

Large scale projection specialists The Electric Canvas picked up two awards for their work on THE NIGHTS BEFORE CHRISTMAS – the Digistor Drawing Award (Concept, Story Board, Character, 3D Computer), and the Urban Cinefile Award for Design on an Event.

The major award of the night, the coveted Cameron Creswell Award for Outstanding Contribution to Design was presented Kim Carpenter AM, director, innovator, designer and Artistic Director of Theatre of Image.

In presenting the Award, APDG Vice President Julie Lynch referred to Kim as a great pioneer and innovator who has created productions for most major drama, dance and opera companies in Australia.

“His designs have embraced puppetry and digital arts as well as conceptual sets, props and costumes. His artworks and designs are represented in collections and exhibitions around the world. He is a Churchill Fellow, recipient of 2 Helpmann Awards, holder of a Centenary Medal, 2 Sydney Theatre Critics Awards, 3 AWGIEs and he is, of course, a member of The Order of Australia. His most recent productions include THE BOOK OF EVERYTHING (collaboration with Belvoir) now in its 4th year of performances, SNOW ON MARS (Sydney Festival 2011), and LITTLE BEAUTY (The National Portrait Gallery). He is currently creating a major new work – MONKEY…JOURNEY TO THE WEST – for Theatre of Image, to be performed around Australia in 2014 and 2015,” she said.
