IMAX Sydney continues to set international box office records

After the best summer season in four years the IMAX Theatre Sydney has found itself continuing to maintain its position as one of the world’s most successful IMAX theatres.

Three films dominated the box office at the theatre this summer – Beowulf, Sea Monsters 3D and Dinosaurs 3D

The success of Beowulf in IMAX 3D demonstrated yet again that Sydney audiences find Hollywood films presented in the IMAX format to be a compelling film going experience.

Beowulf has been seen by 38,000 people in Sydney since opening in November, grossing more than $800,000 at the Australian Box Office on a single screen.  Despite the film opening on 269 screens nationally the IMAX result in Sydney represents 10% of the national box office.  It is the second highest screen performance for the film globally.

Impressive as the Beowulf result is, it only places the film alongside (or behind) some of the traditional IMAX films screening.

Sydney’s results with Sea Monsters 3D make it the number one screen in the world (the film is only available in IMAX format).  It has been seen by 60,000 people with a box office gross of $810,000.  The result is significant as the film is a natural history documentary and yet the Sydney performance exceeds that of the IMAX theatres at some of the world’s most prestigious museums including the Smithsonian Natural History Museum (Washington DC, US), the Montreal Science Centre (Montreal, Canada), Museum of Science and Industry (Chicago, US), the Science Museum (London UK) and many others.

The season of Dinosaurs 3D in Sydney towers over both Beowulf and Sea Monsters 3D.  It has been watched by over 94,000 people since opening, generating more than $1,258,815 at the Australian Box Office.

‘The box office figures for Beowulf 3D, Sea Monsters 3D and Dinosaurs 3D at IMAX Sydney are tremendous and continue the ongoing appeal of the IMAX format with Sydney cinema goers who have embraced all three releases,’ says Mark Bretherton, CEO of the Worlds Biggest Screens Pty Ltd, the operators of the IMAX Theatre Sydney.

‘The 3D experience at the IMAX Theatre Sydney is a totally different cinematic experience and no other cinema in Sydney is able to match it. We are pleased to be setting the standard across the world and are looking forward to the new wave of 3D films to be released this year.’
