Within 48 hours of subscription TV channel World Movies announcing a free movie marathon at a Sydney cinema, four of five sessions were booked out.
World Movies has booked a bigger cinema to allow for second round tickets, available online from Thursday August 25 at www.worldmovies.com.au. To secure seats, people must register online for single or double tickets to any of the films screening on the day.
It is the first time in its 15 year history that World Movies has gone from the small screen to the big screen. In a partnership with Palace Cinemas, World Movies is screening five films free of charge to cinemagoers at the Verona Cinema in Sydney’s Paddington on September 10.
“People can get together with friends to sample some the best international cinema on offer,” SBS Subscription TV general manager Sandra Bender said. “We’ve curated a movie marathon that brings together love stories, Jackie Chan and zombies: the kind of films we adore programming on the channel,” she said. “People can come to one film, or to all five.”
Everyone attending will receive a free box of popcorn and the chance to go in the draw for a year’s FOXTEL subscription. Following the Sydney marathon, World Movies plans a similar one-day event in Melbourne.
The films screening on September 10 are as follows:
12.45pm Amelie (France, 2001) Rated: M
Audrey Tautou stars in this deliciously romantic comedy smash about a woman who decides to change the world by changing the lives of the people she knows.
3.15pm Every Jack has a Jill (France, 2009) Rated: M
Parisian girl Melanie Laurent discovers an American tourist’s suitcase and falls in love with the mystery man.
5.15pm Little Big Soldier (Hong Kong, 2010) Rated: M
Jackie Chan plays a pacifist soldier during the Chinese battles of 3000BC. Heart-stopping action mixes with hilarious comedy as he plays dead to survive.
7.30pm Talk to Me About Love (Italy, 2008) Rated: M
Silvio Muccino directs and stars in an exhilarating journey into the art of seduction.
10pm The Horde (France, 2009) Rated: R18+
Warring cops and a gang of criminals need to stick together to survive a zombie outbreak.
Seating is limited and registering to attend is essential.
